Recap: 2015 US Air Guitar Central Conference Finals

Posted by Camille Barichello on Fri, Jul 17, 2015 @ 11:44 PM

The Chicago semifinals, aka the US Air Guitar Central Conference Finals, took place Friday night at the Double Door (is it even possible not to call it the "Dumbledore"? I think not). They were streamed live, and they were rife with excitement. There was talent! There were costumed games of mistaken identity! There was even SCANDAL. I'll get to all of that in good time, but let me just say that if this is how the "postseason" is going to go, it's not going to be dull.

US Air Guitar Helping a Member of the Air Guitar Family

Posted by Camille Barichello on Fri, May 01, 2015 @ 08:48 AM

I mentioned this in passing in the Chicago Qualifier post, but let's have a whole post about it because it's important and it's bigger than just Chicago. I say that air guitar is a family all the time, but this is the proof. Plus: ways to help!

Second-Hand Recap: 2015 Chicago US Air Guitar Qualifier

Posted by Camille Barichello on Wed, Apr 29, 2015 @ 03:05 PM

Chicago's competitive air guitar scene is a strange beast. It's chock-full of talent, but there are also a lot of big names there who are retired or semi-retired. This year, like last year, the qualifier was a small and intimate affair, wherein everyone went to round 2 and the venue was a basement that mocked at people's attempts to connect to the internets. But that didn't stop it from being a totally face-rocking show.

Second-Hand Recap: 2014 US Air Guitar Midwest Semifinal

Posted by Camille Barichello on Thu, Jun 19, 2014 @ 09:09 AM

The first semi-final of the 2014 US Air Guitar season has taken place! The Midwest Semifinal pulled in the top 3 air guitarists from the qualifiers in Kansas City, Des Moines, Chicago, and Detroit. Surprising no one, the midwest is always a force (it's not for nothing that the current reigning World Champion, Mean Melin, hails from Kansas City). The general consensus among spectators and participants was that this semi-final was basically a "mini Nationals" with regard to the level of talent and excitement!

Second-Hand Recap: 2014 Chicago US Air Guitar Qualifier

Posted by Camille Barichello on Tue, May 27, 2014 @ 09:30 PM

Following hot on the heels of Kansas City, Chicago's US Air Guitar Qualifier took place on the following night. The contrast between the two was marked - KC was pretty easy for everyone else to keep track of and even had a livestream, where Chicago's was in a subterranean venue and no one's phone had service. KC had what has to be a record number of competitors with 21, where Chicago had about 8. But the rock was not diminished by the smaller scale.

2013 Midwest US Air Guitar Semi-Final Second-Hand Recap

Posted by Camille Barichello on Wed, Jul 31, 2013 @ 09:00 AM

Can we just get this out on the table? I am so jealous of everyone who was in Chicago for the Midwest US Air Guitar Semi-Finals on Saturday. I was out with friends, having what any reasonable person would think was a good time, and I was all discombobulated and cranky, and I'm going to chalk that up to wishing I was in Chicago, rather than the fact that I was forced to play pool.
