Recap: 2015 US Air Guitar Western Conference Finals

Posted by Camille Barichello on Tue, Jul 28, 2015 @ 09:36 AM

I know the Atlantic and Eastern Conference Finals just happened, but we need to talk about the Western Conference Finals in San Francisco first. Because, just like the Central Conference Finals, they were marred by scandal. This season, you guys. Well, no - the regular season went more or less smoothly. This post-season is the thing that's having dramatics. Maybe semifinals need to be put together by regular air guitarists as well, like qualifiers are, since everyone has proven that they can do it pretty well.

Second-Hand Recap: 2014 US Air Guitar Northwest Semifinal

Posted by Camille Barichello on Thu, Jul 17, 2014 @ 09:00 AM

The third semi-final of the 2014 US Air Guitar Season has just taken place in San Francisco! Look, ok, I don't think of San Francisco as the Northwest either, but I don't make the rules or name the names. This semifinal brought together the top 3 air guitarists of the San Francisco, Portland, and Santa Cruz qualifiers - which would make it the smallest semi with only 3 qualifiers feeding into it, except that no one from Detroit showed up to the Chicago semifinal. But big things come in small packages sometimes. This was an intense battle!

Second-Hand Recap: 2014 San Francisco US Air Guitar Qualifier

Posted by Camille Barichello on Sat, Jun 28, 2014 @ 11:00 AM

The same night as Portland's, San Francisco put on their Qualifier! The west coast was basically throbbing with air guitar fury. It looked like this took place in the world's most well-lit bar, but other photos told a different tale. One thing that was confirmed by everyone was that it didn't matter what the lighting was like since all anyone could see was underwear. A veritable maelstrom of panties. That's right. Allow me to explain.

This qualifier brought in creative features from various different events around the country. One being, of course, the "Panty Bonus." The audience was given a big pile of underwear to throw at the contestants to show approval, and getting high numbers of undies chucked at you could improve your score. They also used the opening battle royale concept to choose the order of competitors, rather than just plain old picking numbers - a group of competitors went onstage at the same time, played the same mystery song together, and whoever was best got a more favorable, i.e. later, spot in the order. They also did the new classic "everyone gets their own song" second round tactic.

Tucson US Air Guitar Qualifier Not-Even-a-Recap Recap

Posted by Camille Barichello on Fri, Jun 28, 2013 @ 01:24 PM

Did you know that Tucson's US Air Guitar Qualifier took place in a mall? In broad daylight? With children? No one even had an air name or a song that they had brought with them! It was basically air guitar improv, or maybe air guitar from the ground up. Veteran competitor Vlad DM Wailer and the event's ATC (that's Air Traffic Control, for the uninitiated: the person who pushes the space bar and plays the music), Jonas, being the only people with US Air Guitar experience, did their best to educate their air guitarists and bring them into the fold, although they were hampered a bit by the venue (no beer) and the rules of the guitar festival that this was a part of (no shirtlessness, and definitely no raunchiness, which means that the entirety of Boston air guitar would pretty much be disqualified).
