2013 Houston US Air Guitar Qualifier Second-Hand Recap

Posted by Camille Barichello on Mon, Jul 01, 2013 @ 09:30 AM }

There are two primary things you need to know about Houston's US Air Guitar Qualifier, which took place on Friday. First, Air Bear is a party animal in a very literal sense, and second, there's a new air guitar dynasty brewing.

In case you haven't been to an air guitar competition that Air Bear was at, he is the mascot of US Air Guitar, wears a bear suit, gets drunk, and does things that endanger his life and limb (at 2012 Nationals in Denver, he was running out into traffic slapping cars on the hood, and he's fallen off stages and hit on big dudes' girlfriends). He also put together the Houston shindig, so naturally it was a very party situation, being sponsored by Sailor Jerry rum, and being a benefit for Planned Parenthood (and this is Texas, so obviously that's a very salient issue right now).

Things got so intense that the live-Tweeting kind of fell off after the first couple of competitors, and I've only seen a little bit of information about what went down. The key take-away is that the winner, Venena (that's Spanish for VENOM), is the sister of terrifying Chicago air guitar legend and occasional burrito impersonator Dry Ice - whom you can see featured as the only male air guitarist in the Ladies of Chicago Air Guitar video:

I do not, as yet, have a video of Venena. If you have one, or even a picture where she's performing, hit me up in the comments!

She, along with second-place finisher The Airiachi (does what it says on the carton), will be heading to the Midwest Semi-Final taking place in Chicago, where she will go head to head with her own brother!

Oh, and also, Air Bear ate a tarantula. Texas!!

Do you want to eat a tarantula? No? Ok, how about signing up for air guitar next year? These email updates will get you all ready to rock!
