Radio, Boston Air Guitar Qualifier's Home, Closes

Posted by Camille Barichello on Wed, Mar 05, 2014 @ 08:55 AM

Last year, the US Air Guitar Boston Qualifier was held at Radio, a bar and live-music venue in Somerville, Massachusetts. Radio had a history of giving new and local bands a place to play, and as Captain Airhab, the organizer of the qualifier, was in a band that had played there a few times, he had a bit of a history to draw on with the management when trying to book the qualifier.

Preparing for the 2014 US Air Guitar Season

Posted by Camille Barichello on Mon, Jan 20, 2014 @ 08:36 AM

It's a new year, and that means, unbelievable as it may sound, that it's time to start thinking about this year's air guitar season. Since local qualifiers may be starting as early as May (and I hope they are - more on that in a minute), that's only 4 months of time to prepare! For both organizers and competitors, that means it's time to get your head in the game.

Air Guitar for Charity!

Posted by Camille Barichello on Tue, Dec 10, 2013 @ 11:00 AM

Tonight, my place of employment is having a charity auction. Everyone who has a skill, an item, or maybe a sports ticket is putting it up for auction, and the proceeds all go to charity. Well, I don't have sports tickets or a beach house to auction off, and I can't paint or code or teach you to fly a plane, so I had to throw down the only skill I have that anyone's aware of: that's right, I'm auctioning off an "air guitar lesson"! The lucky winner gets to come over to my house, drink a bunch of beers, and Captain Airhab and I will have a 3-part lesson with them:

Posted by Camille Barichello on Wed, Sep 11, 2013 @ 02:03 PM

Last time, I talked about this year's big format changes to US Air Guitar competitions and what that might mean for next year. This time, I'd like to talk about... everything else. What to look for in competition, trends I saw emerging, and of course, the future.

2013 US Air Guitar Season Analysis: part 1

Posted by Camille Barichello on Thu, Sep 05, 2013 @ 12:36 PM

The 2013 Air Guitar season has ended, and we are all (mostly) recovered. What better time, then, to reflect on the season that was? There were some big changes this year, and they affected the way the competitions shook out. Some of those changes are even going to affect next year's competitions. What is next year going to be like? And how did this year's performances set the tone for next time around?

Santa Cruz US Air Guitar Qualifier Second-Hand Recap

Posted by Camille Barichello on Thu, Jul 25, 2013 @ 11:34 AM

Well, that's it - the last US Air Guitar Qualifier of 2013 is in the books. Santa Cruz wrapped up that portion of the season for us last night at The Blue Lagoon. Hosted by veteran Dirty Airy, this qualifier was closer to a classic regional than some of this year's qualifiers (no hat-o-doom, no battle royales) but did shake things up a bit by adding an automatic simultaneous air-off round to pick the second-place winner. The judging panel was also a bit of a new thing in that opposite to the DC US Air Guitar Semi-Final that just took place, with its all-competitor judging panel, Santa Cruz had a non-competitor judging panel! From the sound of things, though, that was not a handicap for them, and the contestants had a solid, consistent set of scores to contend with.

LA US Air Guitar Qualifier Second-Hand Recap

Posted by Camille Barichello on Mon, Jul 15, 2013 @ 08:44 AM

Los Angeles had a lot to live up to with their qualifier, which took place on Saturday. Not only are they the entertainment capital in the first place, but that is also where the US Air Guitar National Finals will be taking place on August 17th (get your tickets now!). So they can't half-ass their qualifier.
